Renewals & Expiration

Common questions about auto-renew, what happens when a domain expires, and renewing before or after that point.

Turn it on per domain, in bulk, or for a whole category, from wherever you manage that domain or category. Auto-renew fires 14 days before a domain's expiration date by default, and that timing is a single account-wide setting, changed under My Account > Advanced Settings > Auto-Renewal, not set per domain or per category. There's no on-by-default behavior for new registrations.

It typically stops resolving fairly quickly, but it isn't gone right away. It moves through a grace period, then a redemption period, then a short final lock, before it's released back into general availability. Recovering it gets more expensive the further along that sequence it gets.

The grace period comes first and is the easiest to fix — renewing during it usually costs close to the normal renewal price. The redemption period comes after, and recovering a domain at that stage costs more, since a redemption fee applies on top of the renewal cost. Recovering a domain in redemption is self-service: Domain Manager shows a notification on the domain with a direct Redeem action, so you don't need to contact support to get it back.

Yes, two ways: select a group of domains outside any category from Domain Manager's Advanced view and renew them together, or turn on Auto-Renew for a whole category so every domain in it renews automatically as each one approaches expiration.

Yes. NameBright sends renewal reminders and other notices tied to your domain, which is why it's worth keeping your contact information current on the account.

Yes, nothing requires waiting until close to the expiration date. As is standard across the domain industry, the added term typically stacks onto your domain's existing expiration date rather than starting fresh from the renewal date.
