DNS & Nameservers

Common questions about DNS records, nameservers, and troubleshooting a change that hasn’t taken effect.

A nameserver tells the internet which server holds your domain's DNS settings. A DNS record is one specific setting within that configuration: where your website lives (A record), where your email goes (MX record), and so on. You typically set nameservers once; you manage DNS records more often as your setup changes.

No. NameBright's default nameservers are there if you want them, but you can point a domain at custom nameservers instead.

There's no NameBright-specific published timeframe. Across the industry generally, DNS changes for most domains propagate within minutes to a few hours, though some changes can take up to 24–48 hours in less typical cases.

A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, and SRV. NameBright doesn't support CAA records. PTR records exist as a type but are configured through your domain's ISP or hosting provider, not through NameBright's dashboard.

Yes, at the category level. DNS records are one of the settings that can cascade across every domain in a category, so a shared configuration applies to the whole group rather than each domain individually. Or from Domain Manager (Advanced View) You can select multiple domains to apply a bulk DNS change.

DNSSEC is a security extension to DNS that helps prevent a domain's DNS responses from being tampered with or spoofed in transit. NameBright signs your domain for DNSSEC automatically when it's on NameBright's own nameservers, so there are no keys for you to generate. If your domain uses outside nameservers, NameBright supports adding the DS record your other DNS provider gives you.

A few common causes, roughly in the order worth checking: the change hasn't finished propagating yet; your device or browser is showing a cached version of the old record; the record itself has a typo; or the nameservers were changed recently and haven't fully propagated either.

25 per domain by default. Once you assign the domain to a category, that limit rises to 50.
