Domain vs. website vs. hosting: what's the difference?

KB-1.6 · 1 min · Updated September 2026

These three get conflated constantly, and they're genuinely separate things:

  • A domain name is the address: what you register, what you renew, what points somewhere.

  • Hosting is the actual computer storage where a website's files live and run. You rent hosting from a hosting provider, which may or may not be the same company as your registrar.

  • A website is the content itself: the pages, code, and design that hosting serves up when someone visits your domain.

You need all three working together for someone to type your domain and see a website: the domain has to point, via its DNS records (see What Is DNS?), to the server where your hosting lives, and that hosting has to actually be running your website's files.
