What is a premium domain?
KB-1.5 · 1 min · Updated September 2026
A premium domain is one priced well above standard registration cost, because it's short, memorable, made of a common dictionary word, or otherwise considered unusually valuable — think a domain like insurance.com versus a random 12-character string.
Premium pricing comes from two different sources depending on the domain:
Registry-designated premium lists — some registries set a permanently higher price for certain names within their TLD, charged at registration and every renewal after.
Aftermarket pricing — a domain someone already owns and is reselling, priced at whatever the current owner is asking, independent of the registry's standard fee.
NameBright's premium domain marketplace runs through HugeDomains, a sister company under the same parent, TurnCommerce (which also owns DropCatch). Premium listings you find through NameBright are aftermarket inventory priced by HugeDomains, not registry-designated premium names.
